Senior Chapter Lead - Data Engineering

At Admiral, Data and technology take centre stage in delivering our market-leading products, and we have a large Data and Analytics function responsible for building and maintaining a cloud data eco-system which supports our data scientists and analysts to build and deploy machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions for all business areas, including Pricing, Fraud, Marketing, and Claims.

An integral part of the technical team, you will be supporting the data engineering function as well as working with key external partners to deliver a leading data capability and help Admiral achieve their digital and data ambitions. This role is at the forefront of delivering an ambitious data transformation strategy as we enhance our market leading data capabilities by moving to a new cloud data eco-system.

The DnA (Data and Analytics) tribe has three subtribes; Decisions and Integrations, Data Hub and Tooling and Applications. The tribe covers a wide range of disciplines including data warehousing, web development, API development, Feature Engineering and Machine learning.

We are looking for an experienced Senior Data Engineer who is looking for a new challenge. Someone to work alongside our Software and QA Senior Chapter Leads to steer and support the data technology strategy and direction for Admiral UK.

This role currently has a team of 5 Chapter Leads who manage teams of Data Engineers and Data Analysts who work on initiatives across the whole tribe, so will require strong people skills to guide engineers at different stages of their careers.

Location

We are open to discussion around remote working possibilities (UK only). Our whole business is still working remotely. We will provide you with everything you need to work comfortably from home. We expect you to be working remotely for the foreseeable future. Once it’s safe to return to the office, you can agree your on-site days at the office with your Line Manager. Ideally we would like to see you at least once or twice a week at our Cardiff office but we do offer some flexibility depending on your location.

Main Duties 

• Work with Senior leadership to define the organisation’s data strategy and build the target infrastructure to deliver the strategy
• To understand core principles of our key platforms and ensure that solutions are a good fit with chosen technology
• Support selection of appropriate technologies to fulfil capability gaps
• Work with teams to articulate principles, practices and Admiral values; to continuously influence and support teams in adopting these
• To stay continuously up to date with the market and our vendors roadmap – and ensure these are reflected both in our strategy and delivery
• Support internal teams by sharing your technical expertise – mentoring engineering staff to become the best at what they do
• To promote agile ways of working and supporting the teams to continuously improve by identifying new delivery approaches

Knowledge and Skills required 

• Worked with a combination of cloud based big data technologies (e.g., HDFS, Spark, Python, Airflow, Beam, Pub Sub, Kafka, Nifi) and (OLTP and Data warehousing) within SQL, NoSQL and other RDBMS’s
• Methodological, logical, and flexible approach, to have gained significant experience as a technical lead
• Extensive Data modelling experience
• Building design blueprints
• Up to date knowledge of business intelligence domain
• Good understanding of software development best practices, including design principles & patterns, security, and performance
• Ability to explain complex technical information in business terms
• New technology awareness, evaluation, and selection. Running or supporting vendor RFI and RFP process and PoC approaches
• Experience of working in a technology-based role and interfacing to a varied number of internal and external stakeholders
• Experience of Scaled Agile practices and ways of working
• Previous experience of leading high performing teams
