What exactly does a Data Analyst do?

Explore a day in the life with Josh

So you’re a whiz at numbers and have a deep interest in data? If you like the sound of a structured environment that’s inclusive and empowering with amazing work-life balance, then you might be interested in Data Analyst jobs at Admiral.

The future is bright for Data Analysts. The Market Research Society (MRS) reported the UK research, insight and analytics industry to have a sterling value of at least £7,000,000,000 - a +40% uplift on the previous estimate of £5bill.

The data speaks for itself, there’s no better time to explore opportunities in data analytics. Whether you’re looking for a graduate role, searching for a new challenge, or want the flexibility of hybrid or remote Data Analyst jobs, we’ve got a range of exciting developments.

What does a Data Analyst do?

Think of data analysts as detectives of the digital world! They work with all sorts of information, like numbers, facts, and figures, just like detectives work with clues and evidence.

Their main job is to collect, organise, and make sense of data to help businesses and organisations make better decisions.

We sat down with Josh Herbert, a Data Analyst, who tells us all about what you can expect from a day in the life of a Data Analyst.

What does a 'typical' day look like for you?

A typical day usually begins with a team stand-up call to discuss what we’re working on, run through tickets on our JIRA Kanban board, and collaboratively work through any blockers together.

We tackle new challenges and opportunities, support different departments and work towards the same goal - to provide insightful analysis to the business that allows stakeholders around the business to make valuable, data-driven decisions.

We set aside time each day to work on requests which can be querying and gathering data using SQL, creating dashboards with Business Intelligence (BI) tools like MicroStrategy, and meetings with stakeholders. But it’s not all work - we make sure to have fun too! We have social activities planned for the team to enjoy together throughout the year, like crazy golf, shuffleboard tournaments, quizzes and other games and events.

If you had to pick your favourite thing about the role, what would it be?

What I love most about being a Data Analyst is the sheer variety of the role. We work with data and provide insights for various business areas, such as Marketing, Finance, and Underwriting. Working with different data keeps the work engaging and interesting.

I feel a strong sense of purpose that comes with solving problems for stakeholders or producing analysis that helps them make data-driven decisions that drive the business forward. I also appreciate that self-development is encouraged and supported in this role.

What makes a Data Analyst role different from any other out there?

As Data Analysts, we’re often required to uniquely blend analytical and creative thinking to extract insights from data and communicate findings to stakeholders. It’s a dynamic role that requires a commitment to learning and adapting to new technologies and methods as they emerge to stay ahead of the curve.

And, what makes this role at Admiral different from other companies?

The culture, technology and data community at Admiral make the Data Analyst role at this company unique. Admiral is a great place to work because of its positive culture and supportive, flexible work environment.

We’re encouraged to test and learn, think outside the box and explore new data tools and techniques to help us be more efficient and effective in our work, develop new skills and stay up to date with the latest trends in the industry.

There is also a well-connected data community at Admiral, fostered by the Data Academy. The Data Academy is unique to Admiral in offering training, development opportunities, networking events and community-building initiatives to help promote collaboration and knowledge-sharing across the business.

If you could give one bit of advice for people thinking about applying for this role, what would it be?

If you’re wondering how to get into data analytics, don’t let a lack of experience or technical knowledge put you off applying for a Data Analyst role at Admiral. We provide lots of internal training and support.

Our team has Analysts from a variety of career backgrounds, from Contact Centre Handlers to university graduates and managers from other business areas. Many of our Analysts had never written any code or worked in data before joining our team. To be successful at Admiral, a willingness to learn and a passion for problem-solving is more important than knowledge or experience!

If you could choose a superpower, what would it be and why?

The ability to master any skill very quickly would be an incredible superpower, and not just because it would help me at work!

You might not get invited to be an Avenger, but you could become a World Series Poker champion, play jazz guitar, and speak five languages.

Set the sails for your dream job

At Admiral, we prioritise customers and happy colleagues - it really is that simple. And we must be doing something right, as one of the most recognised insurance companies in the UK, Admiral has consistently been recognised as one of the best companies to work for in the UK!
