We spoke to Shweta Rajput about what it was like to progress to a Software Engineer through our internal progression scheme, despite having no prior technical experience! Read Shweta's story.
Tell us a bit about being a Software Engineer at Admiral
"I’ve been a Software Engineer at Admiral for almost a year, and I’ve been in the company for around four years in total. As an Engineer, my day-to-day duties typically involve analysing and resolving technical bugs, as well as introducing new features through user stories for our claims system."
How did you get into software engineering without experience?
"My route into software engineering was quite unconventional. I previously worked as a Claims Handler for my first two years here. Admiral then advertised an internal career change programme designed for those without a technical background to get into working in Tech. I was successful in my application and joined the scheme shortly after, going through training to upskill us into various technical roles, including Testers and Developers.
Although I already have a bachelor's Degree in Neuroscience, since joining Admiral Tech, I decided to complete a part-time distance learning Master's in Computer Science to further my understanding in the area, so that’s what I’m doing now."
What’s your favourite part of working at Admiral?
"It’s probably the most common answer but it really is true, the culture. The culture here is unique and having worked at other companies, it definitely stands out as something special. Even though it’s such a large company, somehow it still feels like we’re all part of one community, where everyone’s always supporting one another."
How’s your work/life balance now that we’re hybrid working?
"Work/life balance has always been important at Admiral, and I’ve never felt one creeping into the other. We can all work quite flexibly in my department, and we’re actively encouraged to maintain a balance which is really great!"
