The role of Advanced Analytics within Admiral is ever-expanding and as the team grows to support business demand we need to introduce new roles into the structure. This is an exciting time to get involved with a growing area that makes a real difference to the bottom line.
The Role
Lead Data Scientist is a role for our most experienced and adept data scientists. You will be given some of our most difficult problems to work on. These problems could range from structured data problems through to image recognition.
The Lead Data Scientist will spend a large proportion of their time modelling and solving business problems but they also have a responsibility to develop the wider team. This will take the form of structured training as well as peer reviews and technical sign-off of models.
This role will sit within Risk Analytics and the responsibilities described above will cover all projects within this function.
About You
We are looking for a highly skilled technical person that loves to take responsibility for the latest project and is happy to read, research, and train on whatever is thrown at them. This could include problems on unstructured data, anomaly detection, image recognition, etc.
You will have a passion for data science and will be eager to drive forward the use of machine learning and advanced analytics. You will be business focussed, understand the accuracy vs time and value trade-off and have a track record of delivering valuable models to the business.
You should be comfortable in a culture where decision-making is evidence-based and reliant on rigorous audits.
Responsibilities
• Be an advocate for Advanced Analytics within the Admiral Group and drive forward our use of machine learning throughout Pricing, Fraud and Telematics.
• Understand, develop, analyse and oversee the implementation of advanced statistical and machine learning models.
• Advise and support data scientists within Risk Analytics on different approaches and techniques. Support the team to think broadly and stretch our capabilities in AI and ML through effective guidance and training support.
• Work closely with the Head of Data Science, Chief Data Scientist, Subject Matter Experts, and Senior Managers to understand and solve problems by asking the right questions and delivering appropriate solutions.
• Remain up to date with trends and developments in technology and methods in the data science community.
Desirable Skills and Experience
• 4+ years’ experience working in Data Science or a relevant field.
• Experience working on projects in the financial services sector, preferably General Insurance Pricing.
• Minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Statistics, or another technical field.
• Commercial experience using supervised learning techniques such as decision trees, GLMs, random forests, or gradient boosted ensembles.
• Proficient in relevant tools such as R, Python, SparkML, SAS, etc.
• Adept in the extraction of both structured and unstructured data from multiple sources.
• Exceptional numerical ability and creative thinker/problem solver.
• Ability to initiate and drive projects to completion with minimal guidance.
• Excellent communication skills with technical and non-technical audiences and a desire to work within a fast-paced, dynamic team environment.
• Ability to positively question Seniors Managers using simple and compelling language.
• Receptive to new ideas and opportunities to innovate.

Due to Covid, we are working remotely. We will provide you with everything you need to work comfortably from home. However, once it is safe to return to the office, we will have days when the whole team comes together to collaborate. You can decide if you want to come to the office between 2-5 days per week.

What areas do you look after?
I am currently responsible for recruiting for all Early Careers roles. I help to manage graduate/non-grad schemes, internships, work experience, ED&I programmes, community outreach, and internal career coaching as part of the Early Careers Talent Team.
Tell us about you and your Admiral story?
I am a Business Management graduate with recruitment experience in Finance, IT and Engineering. My last role was working at the Army Careers Centre recruiting for the British Army and I was the Diversity and Inclusion Lead for the region. After seeing all the great work that Admiral was doing on LinkedIn and the fact it was repeatedly voted in the top 5 Best Workplaces, it made me want to apply. I joined Admiral in June 2021 as a Recruitment Officer and took on the role of Diversity and Inclusion Lead for Recruitment. I then moved to a HR/People Executive role in our People Operations team before coming back to our Talent Acquisition team as a Talent Partner for our Early Careers Team.
