About the Role
We are looking for a Test Automation Engineer to join one of our delivery teams and contribute to the quality of our applications through effective automated and exploratory testing.
In this role, you will be responsible for building, maintaining, and executing automated tests within a product or team area. You will work independently on automation tasks while collaborating closely with developers, product owners, and analysts to ensure testing is well integrated into the delivery process.
This role suits someone who is confident with test automation in a commercial environment and is comfortable taking responsibility for their own work without being expected to define strategy or lead others.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain automated UI test suites using Cypress and Selenium
- Contribute to the development and maintenance of Python‑based automation frameworks
- Create and execute API automation tests to validate backend services and integrations
- Carry out manual and exploratory testing to support effective coverage and investigate complex scenarios
- Work closely with developers, product owners, and analysts to understand requirements and agree appropriate test approaches
- Participate fully in Agile ceremonies, including refinement, sprint planning, reviews, and retrospectives
- Integrate and maintain automated tests within existing CI/CD pipelines
- Monitor test execution, investigate failures, and contribute to improving test reliability and maintainability
- Support test data management and test environment configuration where required
- Ensure test artefacts and documentation are accurate, clear, and kept up to date
- Continuously improve test coverage and automation effectiveness within the team
- Support less experienced test engineers through pairing, code review feedback and practical guidance on automation best practice.
- Maintain accurate time tracking and test automation metrics in Xray to support capacity planning and quality visibility.
- Handle sensitive financial and personal data appropriately in test automation; ensure test practices comply with data security and FCA regulatory obligations.
- Support formal release and change processes; validate automated test execution in pre-production environments.
Essential Skills & Experience
- Commercial experience working as a Test Automation Engineer within an Agile delivery team
- Strong hands‑on experience with Cypress
- Experience using Python to support automated testing and frameworks
- Solid experience with API testing and automation
- Ability to analyse functional and technical requirements to determine appropriate test coverage
- Experience maintaining and extending existing automation suites
- Confidence working independently on automation tasks with minimal supervision
- Experience troubleshooting automated tests, particularly within CI/CD pipelines
- Strong communication skills, with the ability to clearly explain testing outcomes to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders
- A pragmatic, quality‑focused mindset with a good understanding of when automation adds value
- Understanding of financial services regulation and data security requirements in an FCA-regulated lending environment; awareness of handling sensitive financial and personal data appropriately.
- Familiarity with test pyramid principles, shift-left testing and risk-based test coverage.
- Ability to challenge requirements and acceptance criteria for testability; proactive mindset focused on continuous improvement and pragmatic quality delivery.
- Experience with Postman (or Bruno) for API testing; familiarity with Xray, Jira and Confluence.
Desirable Experience
- Experience working in financial services, fintech, or other regulated environments
- Experience with BDD approaches (e.g. Gherkin)
- Cross‑browser and cross‑device testing experience
- Experience working with third‑party or offshore development teams
- Exposure to test automation in complex or legacy systems
