About the job
This is a hybrid role where we expect you to come to our Cardiff office twice a week (Tuesdays & Thursdays)
We are looking for an ambitious and motivated graduate to join our Household Underwriting team in Cardiff. This is an exciting opportunity to begin your career in a technical, data‑driven, and customer‑focused area of insurance, with aim of becoming a part of the Performance, Change & Governance area of the Household Underwriting team.
As a Graduate Household Underwriter, you’ll gain exposure to all aspects of home insurance underwriting — from understanding risk selection to product coverage, where you will be driving performance improvements to ensure we achieve our business objectives and deliver excellent customer outcomes.
As part of this role you will work closely with other areas such as pricing, claims, product, operations, and IT, giving you a well-rounded understanding of how underwriting decisions impact both customers and the business.
About the Team
Household Underwriting is responsible for setting the underwriting criteria for our Home and Landlord insurance products. This includes defining our underwriting philosophy, writing policy wording, ensuring customer‑facing teams apply rules consistently while maintaining strong governance and reporting across the function.
We have 2 different areas within the team and you will have the opportunity to gain experience in each:
1. Performance, Change & Governance (your long-term home)
- Analysing performance data to identify opportunities within underwriting control to grow profitably
- Designing proposals to improve our customer experience, and optimise underwriting rules
- Ensure changes are developed into our systems and the results of the change are monitored
- Contribute to underwriting risk management, controls and continuous improvement of how we work
2. Customer Understanding & Technical Excellence
- Review technical referrals
- Support customer facing teams through training and the creation of technical guidance
- Ensuring our policy wording and documentation is clear, accurate and consistently interpreted
Key Responsibilities
- Build a strong understanding of our home insurance products, our underwriting rules, risk selection, and decision‑making
- Using tools such as BigQuery, Excel and Looker, you will be expected to analyse data to identify trends, issues, and opportunities for improvement
- Support proposals that improve customer experience, growth, and risk management
- Work collaboratively with other teams around the business which include Pricing, Product, IT, Claims and Operations to help implement and test underwriting changes
- Document processes, decisions, and rule changes clearly
- Present findings and proposals in both written reports and formal meetings
- Manage workload effectively and meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment
- Challenge existing processes and contribute to creative ideas
- Make balanced, reasoned judgments that consider both the needs of our customer and the business
Essential Experience & Skills
- A degree at 2:1 or above in any discipline.
- Ability to think critically, solve problems logically, and use data to inform conclusions.
- Proficiency in Excel, with a willingness to learn new data tools, systems, and analytical techniques.
- A self‑starter who is motivated, organised, proactive, and keen to develop a career in underwriting.
- A confident communicator with strong interpersonal skills with the ability to explain complex or technical information clearly to a range of audiences.
- Comfortable engaging with stakeholders across different teams and levels.
- Flexible and adaptable in a fast‑paced environment with changing priorities.
Desirable Experience & Skills
- A degree in a STEM discipline (e.g., Mathematics, Engineering, Science, Technology).
- Ability to code in SQL, or interest in developing coding skills.
- Exposure to data visualisation tools (e.g., Power BI, Tableau) or statistical techniques.
- An interest in how insurance works, how risk is assessed, and how commercial decisions are made.
- Experience presenting data, findings, or recommendations in an academic, professional, or extracurricular setting.
Please note - we may close this vacancy early if we receive lots of applications or business priorities change.
