Household Underwriting are looking for a recent graduate to join their team. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to develop their career in a technical insurance role.
About the Team
Our team sets underwriting criteria for home and landlord products, creating rules, underwriting philosophy, policy wording, and endorsements. We ensure customer-facing colleagues have the knowledge to answer queries accurately through testing, training, audit, and clear guidance, supported by focused MI, reporting, and strong governance.
The department has three focus areas, with opportunities to train in each before specializing:
Operational Support and Development: Reviews technical referrals, risk selection, UW training, and monitoring UW decisions. Includes HH Claims Underwriters handling discrepancies in customer information during claims.
Customer Contracts and Compliance: Ensures policy wording and documents are clear and accurate, identifies product cover changes.
Analysis and Automation: Maximizes insurance offerings through performance analysis, IT system integration, and post-change analysis.
Attention to detail and sound judgment are essential. You'll work closely with colleagues and managers, contributing from the outset, with a focus on making products, documentation, and customer journeys easy and compliant.
As a Household Underwriter you will
- Produce proposals that result in good outcomes for our customers and the business.
- Help drive change and improve processes, performance and customer experience through research, analysis and making recommendations within your area.
- Be aware of areas of the team other than your own and how your work could impact them.
- Approach problem-solving with creativity.
- Understand and operate within the rules set by our regulators and within our internal rules.
- Put proposals and policy changes through the appropriate governance process. You will need to clearly communicate your proposals both in written reports and verbally to individuals and in formal meetings.
- Make sound and reasoned judgments based on guidelines rather than a set procedure.
Key skills we are looking for
- Good knowledge of Excel, Word and Powerpoint and the ability to learn other software packages
- The ability to interpret data and technical documents.
- Time management skills, prioritising your various tasks to meet deadlines.
- The ability to challenge the status quo and not be limited by current methods
Qualifications
- A degree. A numerical based degree is not essential but you will need to be able to demonstrate strong numerical skills for the role.
- Be prepared to complete the Chartered Insurance Institute Certificate qualification within 18 months.
Please note - we may close this vacancy early if we receive lots of applications or business priorities change.
