"If you’re a STEM graduate (or soon to be) with a passion for numbers, people and problem solving, our rotational Actuarial Graduate Programme is the ideal opportunity for you to kick-start your career in a FTSE 100 company with an award-winning culture. Our three-year programme will give you the opportunity to develop your expertise and contribute to Admiral’s growth through practical, hands-on placements. Along the way, you’ll be supported by industry experts and peers who were in your shoes not so long ago.
Our Actuarial department’s ability to measure the probability of risk is vital to the future success of the business. As a graduate actuary, you’ll learn from the ground up how we expertly use data to evaluate the risk of an event occurring and any subsequent financial implications. This key information will then be used to manage the risk and maintain our position as market leaders.
Depending on which team you’re placed in at the time, you’ll contribute to work or projects that will influence our investment strategies, reinsurance policies, approach to risk, regulatory reporting and how we reserve and employ capital. Wherever you’re placed, you’ll face exciting challenges which provide plenty of variety and responsibility.
Throughout the programme, you’ll receive on-the-job training and will be sponsored to complete an actuarial qualification (FIA) with the Institute and Faculty of Actuaries, with Admiral providing a generous study package to support you in achieving this. Our investment in your career will allow you to grow as a subject-matter-expert who will help drive and promote actuarial work across the group.
The rotational element of the programme means you’ll soon develop a diverse range of skills and our flat management structure and increasingly global reach will mean you will be exposed to the thinking of a diverse range of colleagues and senior managers in a challenging but rewarding environment.
Each of the three placements lasts one year. Day-to-day, you’ll support both actuaries and analysts by contributing to a broad range of projects and daily activity. Rotating across these areas will give you a strong foundation in actuarial concepts across a variety of disciplines, leading to excellent opportunities for career progression. Depending on business need, you could be placed in one of several areas:
- Capital – this team is responsible for the delivery of economic and regulatory capital requirements calculations, involving focus on data, parameterisation, modelling, documentation and reporting
- Reserving – you’ll support the internal reserve reviews for different products and services (Motor, Household, Van and more) through the full process from data to reporting
- Risk – here you’ll provide review and challenge for other financial and actuarial areas with a view to always add value through recommendations that manage risks to Admiral.
- Regulatory reporting – you’ll support the regulatory reporting and planning processes for the group and insurance businesses
- Reinsurance – this area is responsible for supporting the placement of our reinsurance programmes through detailed analysis and understanding of both the relevant risks and wider insurance markets
- Investments – here a range of analysis is vital to shape our investment strategy with a view to manage market and liquidity risks whilst generating investment return and diversifying into new areas and markets
Other key activity relevant to all teams includes:
- Monitoring and maintaining of our regulatory requirements
- The delivery of regular information and monitoring reports to support management’s decision making
- Supporting various regulatory and accounting workstreams where required
- Maintaining a close relationship with key stakeholders throughout the business
- Supporting internal and external auditors in their review of our work
What we’re looking for:
- Students or graduates with an excellent academic record in a STEM subject with a strong mathematical element
- Strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to build relationships across different departments in the wider business.
- Good organisational skills and ability to prioritise and plan your own workloads.
- A strong work ethic - committed and enthusiastic about an actuarial career, with a genuine interest in actuarial issues
- An eye for detail – an ability to delve into the detail behind the data/spreadsheets to challenge existing calculations.
Desirable but not essential:
- Experience using VBA, SQL, R and/or SAS
Key Info
- We offer a competitive salary based on experience. We'll also provide a generous study package to support the completion of an actuarial qualification (FIA).
- Duration: 3 years (please note we cannot accept applications without work permit in the UK for the whole duration of the programme)
- Working hours – 37.5 per week, flexible
- Location: Hybrid, with one day per week in our Cardiff offices. We will provide you with everything you need to work comfortably from home.
Selection Process
- To submit your CV with a written application
- Online numerical test
- A group assessment centre with other applicants (in our Cardiff office)
- A face-to-face interview

Talent Partner - Early Careers
Tell us about you and your Admiral story?
I joined Admiral in 2021 as a Recruitment Officer looking after our Pricing department and other Graduate roles. Internal mobility is fantastic at Admiral, I was lucky to take a career change into a different role, within our UK Data Academy as an Engagement and Content Officer. Recruitment will however always call to me, I’m very excited to have recently moved back to the Talent Acquisition team as a Talent Partner in Early Careers looking after our Graduate Programmes and Emerging Talent at Admiral.
Why would you recommend Admiral?
I’ve never looked back since joining Admiral. The culture is second to none and I am surrounded by incredible and the most supportive colleagues. Wellbeing is genuinely cared for here with many initiatives to support everyone. You can see the real difference Admiral makes for its colleagues, it’s not just words!
