Gill, Quality and Development Coach and Animal Lover

Introducing our new blog series, I Belong, giving you a peak into Admiral, meeting our fascinating and inspiring colleagues from around the Group and giving insight into our friendly, diverse and inclusive workplace culture.

We’re lucky to have some brilliant people work for us, meet Gill…

I am over state retirement age and at Admiral, I belong

Hello, this is me, Gill and I've belonged to the Admiral family for 22 years. I ’ve always worked within the claims department in a few different areas, working in my current role as Quality and Development Coach within Swansea Claims Service for around 15 years.

One of my greatest loves is animals and apart from caring for my own two elderly rescue dogs, I support a few animal charities including Goodheart Sanctuary in Kidderminster, which I love visiting whenever I can, and regularly adopt a variety of animals for myself from them, and as gifts for others (saves me thinking what to buy 😊). When I do reduce my hours further toward retirement, I’d love to become more involved in local animal charities.

From department store sales to insurance and fitting in

I chose to apply for a job at Admiral when I was made redundant from my sales job at a local department store when it sadly closed. I had worked in the retail industry for over 20 years and didn’t really know anything else business wise. I thought I’d take the opportunity to try a different industry and Diamond (each brand recruited separately back in 1999) sounded like a good place to work in Swansea at the time. I wasn’t convinced I’d fit in and thought at least it would tide me over until I found a job more suitable. Here I am 22 years later still belonging very comfortably here and living the Admiral dream!

One saying is if you enjoy your job, you never have to work a day

As soon as I joined my induction training team back in 1999, I realised how different Admiral was. The culture is like nowhere else I have ever worked, very supportive. One saying is if you enjoy your job, you never have to work a day, well I feel that is very true here for me. I am allowed to be myself and I am in a role totally suited to my skills. Admiral utilises expertise and talent and matches people to roles, sometimes creating the role for the person! There is always someone to support you in whatever area you need, whether that’s work related, or personally. I've met life-long friends here. I feel valued and appreciated and have a great sense of belonging.

My favourite thing is having the opportunity to support all our new induction intakes (so very many over the years). I also love creating bespoke individually tailored coaching sessions for any Claims handlers through their claims journey at any stage. I get to know people well and watching them learn, grow and enjoying what they do is just so satisfying.
