The vision for Tech in Admiral

Our tech sphere is ever-evolving here at Admiral. Our Chief Technology Officer, David Darby, caught up with us to discuss how we’re using cloud, data, analytics and digital to ensure our customers are provided with the very best.

With approximately 120 vacancies across Admiral Tech looking to be filled throughout 2021, there is a vision for considerable expansion on the technology currently in use. With this opening a fantastic opportunity for talented tech heads to join our dynamic workforce we asked David Darby, Chief Technology Officer, to discuss the vision for Admiral Tech.

What’s the most exciting project or upcoming change happening within Admiral Tech?

Admiral is on a journey to Admiral 2.0, an organisation that maintains our historical strengths but is more agile and digital first. To support the journey to Admiral 2.0 we are building a next generation architecture, leveraging cloud, data, analytics and digital to continually improve customer experience and place the customer at the heart of everything we do.

What do you think really sets Admiral Tech from the competition?

Admiral is a great place to work and has been recognised as one of the UKs best places to work for the last 21 years. We hire smart people and provide opportunities for them to grow by working on interesting and leading-edge technology programmes.  We take training and career growth seriously and have career paths for all IT skills.

What does Admiral want to be known for within the tech area?

Here at Admiral, we would like to be a technology employer of choice, so that both graduates and seasoned professionals aspire to join us. Admiral embraces modern technologies, modern ways of working and collaborates with our technology partners, giving huge opportunities to work on exciting projects, implementing leading edge technologies, and leveraging cloud computing.

What’s the culture like here and how is it changing?

Our philosophy at Admiral is simple yet effective: people who like what they do, do it better. Our culture is honest, open, and focused on four key areas: Communication, Equality, Reward & Recognition, and Fun.

As a department we make sure that Admiral Tech is a diverse, open, fun, and happy place to work. We actively encourage healthy challenge and debate and ensure career opportunities and development are available to all. We have lots of ways that we recognise the achievements of our teams and individuals, from the prestigious annual awards through to monthly recognition voted on by the whole department.

Like many organisations, the Covid pandemic enforced remote working on us, but in typical Admiral style we have risen to the challenge and embraced smart working while maintaining our culture.  Going forward we will have a balance of home and office working that is tailored to individuals and their roles.

What is the ‘Vision for Tech’ in Admiral?

Admiral is a becoming a digital first business, recognising this, we will adopt modern technologies, embrace modern working practices, collaborate with technology partners, and leverage cloud computing to become a “FinTech at Scale".

Do you think there are lots of opportunities to grow and develop here?

Admiral Tech has an exciting agenda that provides opportunities for our staff to grow and develop by working with leading edge technologies and collaborating with leading technology partners.  Beyond Tech, there are always opportunities for colleagues to move departments and work in other parts of the business, both in the UK and further afield.

Look out for the Tech vacancies emerging this year, along with several prospects across their other areas such as working with Cloud and Pricing. The opportunities are endless.
