How to prepare for a Video Interview

With more and more companies interviewing remotely, we wanted to share our top tips on how to prepare for a video interview.

  1. Prepare – Although it maybe a little different to what you are used to it’s still an interview so do your research and practice interview techniques beforehand.

  2. Dress appropriately – Dress as you would for a face to face interview, this shows commitment and makes a great first impression.

  3. Background – Be mindful of where you sit. You want to make sure there is nothing inappropriate or distracting in the frame. Also try not to sit in front of a window, the lighting will make it hard for the interviewers to see you properly.

  4. Let others know – If you have others in your house then let them know you will be busy during the time of the interview to avoid interruptions, you could even put a note of the door of the room you are using to avoid being disturbed. You can also use headphones too if you want to avoid any background noise.

  5. Notes - If you want to write any notes down during interview, do so with on paper and pen (so have these to hand before getting started). Just let the interviewers know prior. You want to avoid using the device you are using for anything other than the interview.

  6. Sound - Make sure other devices like your phone are on silent (not vibrate) and that other sounds on your device are turned off.  For example, the sound of a new email coming in, as again, this can be distracting for both you and the interviewers.

  7. Check - Check your internet connection is stable and if it’s not the strongest, make sure other devices which use the internet such as a games console and phones are turned off. Its also a good idea to test everything in advance, try calling a friend and make sure sound and image all work ok.

We hope these tips are helpful and go some way in achieving skype interview success.

As always, we would welcome an application from you. To view our current vacancies, please click here.
