"Software Engineering Lead (Data & Analytics Tribe)
The DnA tribe is responsible for creating and maintaining a cloud-based Data and Analytics platform for Admiral Group. The tribe works across a significant number of Admirals strategic initiatives including Pricing, Fraud, Customer Contact and Digital.
The tribe is made up of five engineering squads with a view of increasing to nine squads over the coming months. The tribe covers a wide range of disciplines including data warehousing, web development, API development and machine learning.
We are looking for an experienced Senior Software Engineer who is looking to take the next step in their career to guide our Software Engineering practices across the tribe. You will report into the Head of Technology and you will be responsible for building up our Software Engineering capabilities.
You will need strong people skills as you will be training, mentoring, and guiding Engineers at different stages in their career and helping them with their career development and progression. This role may develop to include direct people management in the future.
You will support the squads by providing technical advice and guidance. You will be an experienced sounding board for technical problems and an escalation point for decisions. Alongside this, you will develop best practices and coding standards to support the tribe in their day to day work.
You will be a member of our Technical Design Authority that reviews, discusses and approves all architecturally significant changes to the Data Platform.
Main Duties
- Providing technical leadership and engineering guidance to the Software Engineers in the Tribe resolving technical constraints and roadblocks.
- Supporting teams for problem identification, root cause analysis, and decision-making
- Working closely with the Head of Technology to provide technical direction, patterns, principles, and coding standards for the Software Engineers.
- Understanding, teaching, or sponsoring the software and hardware engineering skills needed to support the development of high-quality code, components, systems, and solutions
- Being an active member of the Technical Design Authority for DnA.
- Attracting and recruiting the right level of person to the tribe; technically competent, motivated and team orientated.
- Career and personal development of the Software Engineers within the DnA tribe
- Providing freedom and safety so that individuals and teams are free to innovate, experiment, and learn from failure
- Serving as a coach and advisor to the Squads. Remaining close enough to the Squads to add value, while staying far enough away to let them problem-solve on their own
- Communicating openly and honestly with all stakeholders
Knowledge and Skills required
- Significant experience working in a Senior Software Engineering role
- Deep knowledge of cloud-based solutions, with GCP experience preferred.
- Previous experience of working with products that have regular releases through automated CI / CD processes
- Experience working with and the embedding of security best practices into day to day engineering
- Previous experience of Scaled Agile practices and ways of working, including the use of tools such as Jira, Confluence etc
- Previous experience of mentoring or managing teams.
