About the Role
The Senior Project Manager role is designed to support the Chief Technology Officer, helping to deliver the IT portfolio of projects to the correct governance standards.
The Senior Project Manager will be expected to manage and deliver their assigned projects to the same standard of other PMs but will also be responsible for supporting the wider Project Management Office activities and active Project Portfolios, both by directly assisting other Project Managers and by tackling other non-project-specific challenges.
- The Senior Project Manager will be expected to be able to handle any and all types of projects assigned to them.
- They will also act as a point of referral and support for an established team of Project Managers.
- They will be required to spend their time moving between different projects whilst offering advice and assisting with a variety of projects at different stages of development.
- Previous experience of IT project management will be essential to this role, as is a strong focus on business analysis and development functions to facilitate quality focused business change.
- You will be required to manage your own time and diary productively to ensure completion of your own tasks and that of each project.
Main Responsibilities
The Senior Project Manager will be responsible for managing projects from inception, through to delivery, whilst ensuring that they are kept within the agreed service level times. Projects must be fully documented and maintained, including risk/issues logs, communication logs, change control and any other controls as defined in the Project Management Guidelines.
In addition to the above, the Senior PM will also be tasked with providing coaching, mentoring, and guidance to Project Managers to assist them with successful project delivery. They will also be tasked with providing support and assistance for the sustained and successful delivery of the wider IT portfolio, helping to resolve blockers, ensure processes are followed, and ensuring that quality standards are met. The Senior PM will also directly line mange two Business Analysts.

About You
The Senior Project Manager will be capable of handling all project types contained in the project portfolio. The Senior Project Manager must possess excellent stakeholder management skills and the ability to work under pressure, as their role also offers a safety net to the IT Portfolio, by being able to pick up projects mid-flight that require direct intervention due to unforeseen complexities or loss of previously assigned resource.
As well as being able to effectively deliver complex projects, the Senior Project Manager role also aims to improve the overall effectiveness and quality of the project management team, both by directly supporting other project managers and by championing quality management processes such as mentoring, coaching, and peer reviews. Knowledge of project methodologies and internal process also assists with their duties in supporting the PMO in evaluating and improving PMO processes and policies, which leads to continuous improvement over time.
|Knowledge, Abilities, and Experience
Must have
- Familiarity with core Microsoft Office products (i.e. Word, Excel, Powerpoint, MS Project)
- Ability to engage and communicate with stakeholders at all levels
- Solid understanding of project methodologies and project terminology
- Able to demonstrate extensive project management experience across a range of projects
- Excellent multi-tasking skills and able to prioritise work
- Excellent project planning experience
- Able to assist with troubleshooting on projects that need additional support
- Able to provide mentoring and guidance for other Project Managers
- Able to provide input into portfolio level risk and issue management
- Able to help others to check and improve quality of work
- Ready to anticipate and support the activities of other members of the team
- Able to establish and maintain excellent working relationships within the business
- Understands the interfaces with other departments
- Able to propose and contribute to “Continuous Improvement” ideas related to Project Management disciplines and assist in their delivery
Desirable Qualifications
- PRINCE2 Practitioner
- APM Project Management Qualification (PMQ), APM Project Professional Qualification (PPQ) / Practitioner Qualification (PQ)
