"We are looking for someone inquisitive and keen to make an impact using innovative analytical methods. You must be interested in machine learning, experience in natural language processing (NLP), and be ready to expand your skills as the field progresses.
Data and technology take centre stage in delivering our market-leading products. We have a large Advanced Analytics function that builds and deploys machine learning and artificial intelligence solutions for all business areas, including Pricing, Marketing, and Claims.
But we don't like to stand still; we want to provide business insight and solve business problems in new and innovative ways, working with unstructured text data, including product reviews, customer feedback and transcripts.
The successful candidate will report into the core Advanced Analytics function for training, support, development, and best practice. However, they will work closely with the business teams to develop meaningful solutions that best meet their needs. The role will cover a diverse range of approaches, including projects with unstructured data, raw text, speech, and images, as well as traditional structured data problems. With over 4 million interactions with our customers every day, we have a lot of data to be put to good use.
Main Responsibilities
- Support the business and solve problems using a range of advanced statistical, machine learning and artificial intelligence techniques.
- Research new ideas and stay up to date with the world of data science.
- Support other members of the team to ensure models are easy to deploy.
- Be an advocate for data science within Admiral, helping the business understand where and when it can add value to its processes.
- Contribute and commit to the training and development of Graduate Data Scientists.
- Contribute to the data scientist community within Admiral in a positive way.
About You
Whilst you enjoy research and proposing solutions to the rest of the team, you keep an equal focus on delivering business value. Equally, you enjoy learning about the business needs and working with a range of stakeholders.
Desirable Skills and Experience
- 2+ years’ experience working in Data Science or relevant field.
- Minimum of a bachelor's degree in a quantitative discipline.
- Proven NLP experience, including topic clustering, text classification and sentiment analysis, and experience with other unstructured data problems.
- Experience with recurrent neural networks and word embedding techniques such as word2vec is beneficial.
- Proven experience using supervised learning techniques such as GLM's, random forests, or gradient boosted ensembles.
- Experience using Python or R, preferably within a cloud environment.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to tailor communication across a range of technical and non-technical audiences.
Salary, Benefits and Work-Life Balance
We do not have a set salary for this position, as it will be dependent on the successful candidate’s experience. We are happy to see CVs from all candidates who meet the requirements and will be happy to discuss the remuneration package.
When we return to our offices, we will follow a hybrid model of working.
At Admiral, we are proud to be a diverse business where we put our people and customers first. We have great benefits to ensure employees have a great work-life balance; it's one of the reasons we're voted no. 1 in the 2019 Sunday Times Best Big Companies to Work For in the UK. We want you to have an element of freedom to define a working lifestyle that supports this, so accommodate flexible hours wherever possible.

Cardiff
Business Support Recruitment Officer
What areas do you look after?
I currently support Tech Recruitment.
Tell us about you and your Admiral story?
I joined Admiral in February 2012 as a Sales Executive and quickly grew fond of Admiral and its culture. It was clear there were many opportunities and different career paths. I moved over to our Claims function in 2014 as a Case Handler and from there I moved into Claims Underwriting, which lead to an opportunity to work in our IT department in a semi-technical role. I gained valuable insight into a side of the business that I never thought would have been possible. The time was then right to move into our People Services department where I have been since November 2018.
Why would you recommend Admiral?
I really could go on and on as there are so many reasons for me but if I had to pinpoint two, it would be the people and the opportunity for self-development and career growth.
