Household Underwriting are looking for a recent graduate to join their team in Cardiff. This is an exciting opportunity for someone looking to develop their career in a technical insurance role.

The team set the underwriting criteria for home and landlord products. This involves creating the rules that determine whether we offer a quote, creating our Underwriting philosophy in line with our risk appetite, along with writing the policy wording and endorsements (additional terms and conditions).

They are also responsible for making sure that customer facing colleagues have the appropriate knowledge to accurately answer day to day customer queries through testing, training, audit, and producing clear guidance.

All of this is underpinned by focussed, incisive MI and reporting and strong governance.

About the role

The department has three areas of focus, and the successful candidate will have the opportunity to work in each area as part of their training before specialising in one area

Operational support and development

Responsible for reviewing technical referrals from the customer facing teams, risk selection, developing and delivering UW training for other teams within Admiral, monitoring UW decisions made by customer facing agents, data analysis and product performance reviews.

HH Claims Underwriters are also part of this team, dealing with cases where the information a customer told us when taking out the policy doesn’t match the facts discovered when they make a claim.

Customer contracts and compliance

Ensuring policy wording is clear, accurate and correctly interpreted by HH Claims, identifying areas for product cover changes such as unoccupancy conditions or theft cover, and ensuring our UW governance and compliance procedures are followed.

Analysis and automation

This team is responsible for maximising the number of people we can offer insurance to. Through detailed performance analysis using various data sources, proposals are formed to contribute to profitable growth. The team also, working with other departments, is responsible for ensuring the requirements from proposals are built into the IT system and post-change analysis is completed.

All roles within the team require attention to detail and the ability to make decisions based on well thought through judgement and analysis. This is essential given the complex nature of home insurance and the wide variety of cover we offer.

You will work closely with colleagues and underwriting managers, learning on the job and contributing to the team from the outset. With a focus on digital, our aim is to make our products, documentation, and customer journey as easy, understandable and accessible as possible while ensuring they comply with regulations.

As a Household Underwriter you will

  • Develop time management skills, prioritising your various tasks to meet deadlines.
  • Challenge the status quo and not be limited by current methods.
  • Ensure you always have our customers best interests in mind. Any proposal you produce will need to result in good outcomes for our customers and the business.
  • Help drive change and improve processes, performance and customer experience through research, analysis and making recommendations within your area.
  • Be aware of areas of the team other than your own and how your work could impact them.
  • Approach problem-solving with creativity.
  • You must be able to understand and operate within the rules set by our regulators and within our internal rules.
  • Proposals and policy changes must go through the appropriate governance process. You will need to clearly communicate your proposals both in written reports and verbally to individuals and in formal meetings.
  • Be able to demonstrate ability to make sound and reasoned judgments based on guidelines rather than a set procedure.
  • Ability to problem solve in a balanced way, considering customer needs as well as those of the business.
  • Ability to interpret data and technical documents.

Key requirements and qualifications we are looking for

  • A degree. A numerical based degree is not essential but you will need to be able to demonstrate strong numerical skills for the role.
  • Good knowledge of Excel, Word and Powerpoint. The ability to learn other software packages and MI reporting skills would be an advantage.
  • Be prepared to complete the Chartered Insurance Institute Certificate qualification within 18 months.

Additional Information

  • We operate a hybrid working model. The role requires a minimum of one day per week in the office (or more if you prefer). Some weeks will require 2 days office attendance.
  • We will give you everything you need to work from home

Please note - we may close this vacancy early if we receive lots of applications or business priorities change.
