Today is Social Mobility Day, a day to celebrate growth and progression, no matter your background.
Social mobility is a very broad and layered concept that can be defined with one simple question: “Does your background make it harder, or easier, for you to achieve your life’s goals?”
Socioeconomic factors directly affect job security and career development, making accessible pathways essential for everyone to reach their potential.
Our colleague, Katie, shares her story of having no grand career plan to finding confidence in her path.
Katie’s story
I grew up a in a single-parent household in Newport, where my mum couldn’t work because of her disability. I stayed close to home, studying Geography at Cardiff University, and wanted to find a job while still being there to support her.
I joined Admiral in 2019 in Claims, and through gaining new skills and saying yes to new opportunities, I progressed through different roles in the Talent Agility Programme (a rotational placement scheme), Product, and finally Talent Acquisition, which led to my current role as a Talent Partner, helping to recruit new talent into the business.
It’s not been the easiest, but I’m proud of how much I’ve grown.
I didn’t start out with a grand career plan, but by staying curious, working hard and building my confidence along the way, I’ve been able to progress across different roles. I even received a Rising Star award at our internal awards event - that was a really special moment where I realised how much I’d progressed since joining.
One of the biggest barriers is simply not knowing what opportunities are out there.
When you don’t have the same networks or work experience connections as other people, it can be harder to picture yourself in certain spaces or even know where to start.
I tell myself not to let imposter syndrome get in the way. Confidence doesn’t appear overnight, but it does grow with time and experience, and you don’t need to have everything figured out to take the next step.
The biggest thing I’ve learned is that working hard and putting in the effort often opens doors to opportunities, so my advice is to learn from every experience and create a career path that works for you.
We know there’s no single path to success, which is why we’re proud to be a place where our colleagues can Grow and Progress, and shape a career that works for you.
