At Admiral, we’re proud of the way our people support each other to grow. In fact - one of our main objectives as a business is to enable internal mobility and make sure our people Grow and Progress.

Our Emerging Talent Programmes are a big part of that, helping colleagues explore new areas of the business, build confidence and shape careers that feel right for them.

Our Emerging Talent Programmes boost internal mobility by giving colleagues the opportunity to experience four six-month placements in different areas of the group over two years. Participants are placed in real roles within each of the teams they join, contributing from day one as well as gaining valuable experience and connections.

Colleagues join our Emerging Talent Programmes to try something new and discover skills they didn’t know they had. We spoke with four colleagues across the group to understand how these programmes work in practice, and what they’ve made possible.

Trying something new and building confidence

Habiba Khatun has a long-running connection to Admiral. She first joined in 2011 in our new business contact centre, later taking two five-year career breaks when each of her children was born. During both breaks, alongside raising a young family, Habiba focused on developing herself, completing a degree in Criminology during the first and a master’s during the second.

When she returned in 2023, she was looking for stability and a chance to put her criminology background to use. After a year with Admiral Law, she realised she wanted to focus more on fraud, security and risk - areas that aligned closely with her studies, and applied for the Emerging Talent Programme to gain structured experience across these fields.

On why the Emerging Talent Programme stood out to her: “I wanted to find the right place for my skills. Emerging Talent felt like the best way to explore different areas without needing all the answers on day one.”

Now working in Travel Fraud, Habiba is part of a small, proactive team focused on preventing issues before they arise. Her role involves analysing data patterns, looking at different types of fraudulent behaviour, and helping ensure customers have the right policy for their needs. She’s also contributing to the communication side of the work, drafting customer emails and letters to ensure they’re warm clear and supportive.

“It’s the type of work I love,” says Habiba. “Solving problems with real-world impact and getting to put my analytical skills to good use.”

Looking ahead, Habiba hopes to explore other areas of fraud and security, possibly cyber, motor or household fraud to build a well-rounded understanding of how we protect customers across the group.

With her experience and enthusiasm, she’s excited to keep growing her career in fraud and making a positive difference.

For Amelia Hatfield, the Emerging Talent Programme was, quite literally, the passport to a whole new career.

Amelia joined Admiral nearly five years ago as a Customer Care Representative in our Halifax, Canada office. Within a year she had progressed to Senior Care Rep, and soon after to Team Manager. Amelia knew she still had more to offer at Admiral and began to look for other opportunities within the group.

Because she holds dual citizenship, the UK was a possibility. And as luck had it, the Emerging Talent Programme was advertised just as she was exploring roles.

“I didn’t know what it would really mean for me,” she says. “But it felt like the perfect way to try things and figure out what I enjoyed.”

Amelia moved across the Atlantic and began a set of placements that took her from autonomous vehicles and fleet insurance through to Investor Relations and talent development. After completing the programme she stepped into a strategic role within Talent and has recently moved into tech, supported by a part-time MBA.

What keeps her motivated is the energy of the work and the people around her.

“Everyone has a voice here, and the great thing about the Emerging Talent Programme is that the programme leaders really advocate for you.”

Amelia also found a great community in previous Alumni from the Emerging Talent Programme - “there’s always someone that’s been in a similar position to you” she explains “and plenty of people you can go to for guidance and who you know will be in your corner.”

Discovering Emerging Talent in Risk

The Risk Department here at Admiral are the first to launch their own Emerging Talent Programme to encourage internal mobility into Risk. The programme gives colleagues experience across the four key areas within Risk: 1st and 2nd line risk within the UK Insurance business, Admiral Group Risk and Admiral Money.

Greig Moran, Head of Risk for UK Insurance had an ambition to increase internal mobility into the Risk team and nurture Admiral’s own talent rather than hiring externally. He made it one of his personal development goals to establish an early careers programme specifically for Risk.

For Greig, the motivation is both professional and personal. He’s passionate about progression and believes deeply in developing talent from within.

“We could easily recruit top graduates from outside, but nurturing internal talent is more rewarding and feeds into our Mobility Business Objective - it’s ultimately better for Admiral and it sits right at the heart of who we are.”

With full support from the Early Careers team, Greig helped shape the programme and design training from the ground up. The first intake drew more than 40 applications for four places - a clear sign that colleagues were eager for an opportunity like this.

On the types of skills that risk values in Emerging Talent, Greig mentioned that an inquisitive, curious mind, as well as resilience and self-awareness are key. “We can teach everything else” says Greig “but you need to be curious - a lot of our job is about asking ‘why’ until we get to the core truth.”

For him, the programme is about creating a space where people thrive, feel supported, and learn to think like risk professionals in a way that reflects Admiral’s culture.

Gina Fawcett joined Admiral through our acquisition of More Than and started in Renewals. After gaining confidence in the role, she wanted more involvement in the business and was keen to find more learning opportunities, but didn’t necessarily expect risk to be the answer.

“I wasn’t sure what risk would really involve at first. But once I got into it, I realised how much collaboration and creativity there is.”

Just two months into the programme, Gina is already helping to simplify complex information, redesign documents and make risk more accessible for colleagues across Admiral. She enjoys creative pursuits outside of work, and this has become a real asset.

One thing that makes the Emerging Talent Programme really stand out for Gina is the amount of support, both from her colleagues in Risk and from the talent team that runs the programme.

“Everyone is so supportive and open - there’s no ego and you’ve got real freedom to give things a go, knowing people are there to support you.”

Gina is one of four people rotating through all four areas of Risk over two years, becoming some of the only colleagues in the company who have experience of the entire risk landscape end-to-end - which she finds really exciting.

“I came into this not really knowing what to expect” explains Gina “but it’s actually really fun. Risk shows up in everyone’s day-to-day life. A big part of our job is making it understandable.”

None of these journeys were linear. And that’s the point. At Admiral, we know that careers don’t always follow a predetermined path, which is why the Emerging Talent Programmes are so essential to giving colleagues the broadest possible experience.

The future for Admiral’s Emerging Talent Programmes

Emerging Talent Programmes continue to grow across Admiral, fuelling internal mobility by offering colleagues a chance to explore, build confidence and find the path that feels right for them. And this is just the beginning - we plan to launch more department-specific programmes just like the one Gina’s on.

Whether you’re early in your journey, returning after time away, or simply ready to take on a new challenge, these programmes are designed to help you discover what’s possible within Admiral.
