After spending 15 years as a Maths teacher and wanting a change, I jumped into the world of data analysis.
It’s been a whirlwind of growth and change, and having a mentor has made a huge difference.
I’m currently a Data Analyst with the Learning and Development team, and my day to day consists of turning learning data into insights that then influence our development resources across the business, allowing our team to make smart decisions, strengthen our learning culture, and keep improving programmes that help people grow.
My first year at Admiral was exciting and fast‑paced, and I wanted to shape my development with purpose.
Seeking a mentor felt like the right way to learn from experience, gain perspective, and keep growing with intention.
I found my mentor through my involvement in Admiral’s Women in Tech community. They piloted a mentoring platform called ConnectR – think of it as a social network for mentoring. It matches colleagues across Admiral for mentors and mentees based on interests, skills, and goals.
I was sceptical at first, but it turned out to be brilliant.
It made mentoring feel accessible and supportive, and from day one it was a two‑way commitment to learning with purpose.
The experience has been invaluable. I’m naturally driven, so having a mentor helped me slow down and recognise my progress. We explored how I respond when I’m pushed out of my comfort zone and what that says about how I learn and adapt. We also looked at the management styles I thrive under and how I show up in working relationships. I’ve always believed managing is a partnership, and mentoring reinforced that.
I’m hugely grateful to my mentor, Troy.
He helped me work through frustrations, championed my achievements, and shared wisdom that’s grounded and practical. The experience has given me clarity in my new career and shaped my understanding of myself, in ways I didn’t expect.
Finding a mentor at Admiral couldn’t be easier, whether it’s through our many colleague networks, our Learning and Development team, or simply word of mouth.
Our online Grow & Progress platform allows you to take control of your development, whatever that looks like for you.
