Travel Insurance Underwriter (12 months secondment)

The COVID 19 pandemic has no doubt raised the profile of the Travel Insurance Industry, highlighting the importance of travelling with insurance to customers.  New scenarios have created the need to regularly assess the risk we are exposed to, but also gives an opportunity to look for new areas of cover to offer customers. 

You will work closely with the existing Travel Underwriter to play a vital role in ensuring the Travel book is profitable, and the product is fit for purpose for customer needs and regulatory requirements.

The role is for a 12-month secondment with the opportunity to lead to a permanent role.

Job Purpose:

Ensure Admiral’s Travel Insurance product is marketable, technically correct and does not expose Admiral to adverse risk. Through analysis, make recommendations that will contribute to the Travel Underwriting  strategy of protecting our loss ratio whilst maximising profitable growth.

Main Duties:

  • Ensure that underwriting referrals are dealt with promptly and in line with our underwriting philosophy.
  • Through regular monitoring, ensure that underwriting rules are being followed correctly throughout the business. Make recommendations to improve the process.
  • Assist with the production of monthly job knowledge tests.
  • Identify technical knowledge weaknesses within Operational departments and drive through improvements and further training,
  • Ensure our policy wording and documentation is kept up to date and technically correct, and easily understood by our customers
  • Help to create processes and procedures and ensure these are communicated to and understood by the operational areas.
  • Undertake claims analysis and make appropriate underwriting recommendations. Once recommendations are approved, ensure changes are implemented and rolled out to the operational teams
  • Participate in ongoing development of our underwriting footprint through analysis and competitor research. Identify new opportunities to generate profitable growth whilst maintaining an excellent customer journey
  • Conduct Regular Competitor Benchmarking.
  • Research into new products or product extensions working closely with other departments including Travel Pricing, Claims and the operational teams.
  • Support the implementation of fraud prevention and detection tools and processes.

Skills and attitudes required:

  • Ability to learn about our Travel Policy, and have good product knowledge
  • Ability to research and analyse market information such as competitors including key players’ products, policies, trends and developments.
  • Must be an effective communicator, able to build good relationships with the team and stakeholders.
  • Be confident in numerical analysis and reporting.
  • Good written, verbal and presentation skills and knowledge of Microsoft applications (Word, Outlook, Excel and Powerpoint)
  • Self-motivated and organised.
