Becoming a father changed my perspective

Being able to come to work and just be myself is something I used to take for granted

When I joined Admiral in 2007, I was a young 24 year-old who didn’t plan as far out into the weekend, let alone my future family life. I was enjoying my job in Motor Claims, part of a big team and steadily progressing through the ranks.

I’ve always been lucky to be part of great teams and have good relationships with my colleagues. I guess lucky isn’t really the word, it’s just the culture here. Whoever you ask, the most common answer is that the people here make it such a special place to work. Working in such an open and supportive environment makes the biggest difference, even on days where the work itself is challenging.

This support meant everything to me when I became a parent.

Admiral’s support through major life milestones has been invaluable

I know everyone says this, but overnight my priorities shifted and everything immediately centres on your child and their future. My goals at work, my self-development, everything became fuelled by my motivation to be the best parent I could be.

Admiral’s share scheme supported my wife and I in buying a home for our growing family, and it’s continued to support with things like family holidays and Christmas presents. It’s been the savings account I’ve never had to think about.

Becoming a father twice during my time at Admiral has reshaped my perspective, especially around work-life balance.

Having the flexibility to take my children to appointments or attend parents’ evenings has made balancing my work and home life easy, well as easy as it can be with two little ones! I know that I’m trusted to get the work done and continue delivering on my responsibilities, and that confidence alone is really rewarding.

Of course there are times where things may clash, but I’ll always work this out with my manager and wider team, and naturally I try to be as flexible as I can for my own team. We’re all there for each other and that really is the culture across Admiral Money, and the wider Admiral business.

Admiral is a place Where You Can Be You

Our Be You pillar of our people promise, to me, means being supported to nurture my work-life balance. Being a great parent means everything to me, and has a direct impact on how I come to work ready to be a great colleague. Admiral’s always been a very supportive place to work, and as my priorities have evolved, the support has too. I feel very lucky to work here.

Our Where You Can people promise has four pillars: Be You, Grow & Progress, Make a Difference, and Share in our Future.
