About Admiral

Admiral Group is a FTSE 100 Financial Services company with a presence in eight countries. The company was set up in 1993 as a car insurance specialist, but since then the Group has expanded in other countries and other insurance verticals such as household and travel insurance, in loans, price comparison platforms, and has developed innovative products.

The Group has 7 million customers worldwide and employs over 11,000 people across its operations. Admiral is a growth story with an enviable track record of strong financial performances, ROE consistently over 50%, a turnover of £3.5 bn, and a profit before tax of £520 m in 2019.

Admiral’s philosophy is that ‘people who like what they do, do it better’ and Admiral is proud to offer an open culture where achievement is rewarded and recognised and where coming to work is exciting every day. In 2019, Admiral received a special award from ‘Best Companies to Work For’ as the only company to feature within their rankings since they began 20 years ago: a true testament to the Group’s culture.

About Admiral Pioneer

Admiral Pioneer is a new business within Admiral Group with the objective of seeding, launching, and scaling new businesses that will become one of the growth engines for Admiral in the future. These new businesses will anchor around meeting customer needs in growth areas. We will achieve this by experimenting and proving new products, business models, and partnerships through a disciplined, discovery-driven approach.

We are building a dynamic and energizing environment where we will provide all the excitement and freedom of a scale-up but with the support and stability of an established large organisation. We treat our colleagues openly, equally, and fairly and give them a ton of opportunity and freedom to do their best work and make a positive impact.  We make mistakes because building from scratch is not easy but we are curious about where we get it wrong and we take this learning forward. We seek to recruit bright, passionate people who have a can-do attitude who look at the world and see the opportunity in our own small way, to make it better for our customers.

About the Role

We believe that understanding and engaging with our customers is central to everything we do. The way we gather, analyse and understand our customer data will be critical to the launch and success of our propositions. We see the deployment of machine learning and advanced analytics as a key part of our development process, from generating ideas and identifying opportunities to modelling results.

Data Strategy| You will understand our strategic plans (data and business and product level) and create meaningful data sets for modelling and analysis. You will source and access data from within the group as well as external. You will define analytics around customer behaviours (and help prioritise customer groups) through their engagement/lifecycle and use this insight to improve the likelihood of our success.

Tool Creation and Deployment| Working with business leads you will understand their campaign objectives and work with them to source, select, and access the best data to achieve their business aims. You will make data available in formats, timings, and quality that accelerates the success of the business campaigns.

Problem Solving| Working with business leads you will understand our objectives and use a range of advanced statistical and machine learning techniques to inform and influence development and deployment plans. You will deploy accessible visual aids (dashboards etc.) to enable us to track performance. You will work with test groups to test and prove assumptions on customer behaviours.

Engagement & Presentation| You will actively keep abreast of new trends and developments in technology and data science. You will promote the use of data and data science as a key part of our strategic development. You will present insight and learnings in an accessible but compelling way to enable our business leads to make well-informed decisions.

Business Partnering| You will effectively communicate the status, value, and importance of data to partner with Admiral Pioneer business leaders as an SME. You will engage with relevant teams in the Admiral Group (Data and Analytics community) to drive collaboration and development of Data Science across the business. Where appropriate you will work with other companies to develop bespoke solutions or new capabilities.

About You

You are curious and analytical, and someone who enjoys understanding the complexities of a market or how a business works.  You can disseminate complex data and make this interesting and engaging to others.

|Knowledge and Abilities

  • Deep understanding and interest in data and how this can be deployed to drive adoption and growth of new propositions
  • Commercial experience using supervised learning techniques such as decision trees, GLMs, random forests or gradient boosted ensembles
  • Familiar with data storage technologies and management tools - big data solutions
  • Proficient in relevant tools such as R, Python, SparkML, SAS, etc.
  • Adept in the extraction of both structured and unstructured data from multiple sources
  • You will have a good understanding of API technology and how this can leverage the practical use of data

|Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years experience working in Data Science or associated field (ideally overseeing a small team)
  • Minimum of a degree in Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Statistics, or another technical field
  • Experience of using data insight to drive business decisions, growth, and innovation
  • Experience of sourcing data sets through purchase and partnerships
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with technical and non-technical audiences and a desire to work within a fast-paced, dynamic team environment

Additional Information

The Data Scientist will work closely with the Data Engineer and will report into the Chief Operating Officer of the Admiral Pioneer business.

Admiral’s four pillars help define our unique workplace culture and have been the basis for some of our greatest achievements, including being on the Sunday Times Best Companies to work for list for the 17th year in a row. Communication - our first pillar is centred on ensuring that everyone in the company feels involved; everyone knows what’s going on and feels part of a collective endeavour. It’s just as important that communication goes both ways, with people feeling that they can approach any level of management with an openness and willingness to share problems.Equality - we ensure that there are no obvious signs of separation with managers sat amongst their teams on the floors so that everyone is made to feel equal . One of the other ways that we ensure there is equality is by awarding up to £3,600 of shares every year to everyone, at every level in every part of our business.Reward & Recognition – staff are rewarded in terms of incentives, bonuses and in the form of shares. Of course, there is more to rewards than money. It is extremely important to us that we praise people when they do a good job – we give constant feedback and say thank you for doing a good job day in day out.Fun – Our philosophy is that ‘if people like what they do, they do it better’ - staff are encouraged whenever and wherever possible to have fun and spend time with colleagues – this makes life more enjoyable and helps get to know each other better with team away days, afternoons out, Christmas and summer parties and regular competitions and ways to get involved as part of our ‘Ministry of Fun’ offer ways to do this. How does the culture differ to other companies?Unlike many other companies, Admiral has an informal working environment where staff are trusted and have autonomy within their roles. Through Admiral’s flat hierarchy, decisions are made collaboratively and quickly to respond to change and these changes are implemented almost immediately, whereas, in many corporate companies, decisions are made at the top and can take a long time to implement. Management here are flexible, approachable and are there to help you flourish and develop in your role with a good work / life balance encouraged. We spoke to Amiee from People Services - ‘‘My manager approached me and asked if I was finishing early on the day that my daughter was starting high school – it was the thoughtfulness of it all that makes it such a nice place to work here.‘‘They go out of their way to make you feel appreciated and that you’re useful. When I first started I was introduced to the Head of People Services on one of my first days and I had no idea that he was such senior management – you don’t get a sense of the ‘big shots’ here, everyone is down to earth and very approachable. I work with such lovely people and I love that I have job security here’’.We have everything you’d expect from a large FTSE 100 company, like a contributory pension scheme, free shares and dental care, amongst others. However, our commitment to providing staff with the services and support they need to ensure that they are happy and healthy in their working lives ensures we are offering more than the basics.Admiral’s laid back atmosphere means that staff can wear what they feel most comfortable in to work – be it jeans or joggers. There are also endless opportunities to advance your career with regular internal job postings, support and training. By investing in our people and maintaining a supportive workplace, we can assist our staff in achieving their career goals and personal aspirations.Follow us on Facebook for a peek inside Admiral!
